Australia has a rapidly ageing population with older Australians representing a growing proportion of the total population. As we grow older our bodies change and frailties arise. However there is a lot you can do to improve your odds of maintaining a good quality of life as you get older.

These are our top tips to maximise your chances of ageing healthily & happily:

1. Keep physically active. Make an effort to go outside and walk for half an hour or more each day – you’ll feel so much better and your body will thank you for it.

2. Quit smoking. If you give up smoking you will improve your life expectancy and reduce your risk of developing chronic disease, including heart disease, lung disease and dementia.

3. Keep socially active. Research has shown that social activity is a form of mental stimulation which is good for ageing brains. Find out about local groups that organise social and educational activities too – for example, from your local council, public library, or seniors club.

4. Eat well and limit your alcohol intake. A balanced diet will prevent chronic diseases like diabetes and stroke. As well as eating a healthy diet its important to drink regular water and avoid excess alcohol or drinks high in sugar.

5. Exercise your brain. Research has shown that those who engage the brain in new or challenging activities have a lower chance of developing dementia. Common activities include crosswords and sudoku puzzles, pursuing a course of study or learning a musical instrument.
